Intussusception in Adults



Abstract
Intussusception in adults is relatively rare and usually occurs secondary to some underlying causes such as benign tumors, malignant tumors and inflammatory lesions.
Intussusception in adults characterized by its bizarre clinical picture and subacute or chronic course with recurrent partial obstruction. The principle ¢¥of the treatment is operative interven-tion as to the causative lesion.
A clinical review was made with 23 cases of intussusception in adults who underwent surgical management at our institution during past 10 years from July 1965 to Aug. 1975.
The peak incidence was between 31~50 years of age, and the sex ratio was approximately equal. The duration of illness was average 45 days and the cardinal symptoms were abdominal pain in all of-the cases, nausea and vomiting in 1.6 cases, palpable abdominal mass in 13 cases -and bloody stool in 12 cases.
The etiologic factor were found in 14 cases, of which 9 cases were in tumor origin.
The type of intussusception were ileocolic(6 cases), ileoileal(5 cases) and ileocecal (4 cases) Surgical resection was carried out in 17 cases and remains were reduced with manual reduction after exploration.
